About THE ARTIST
Evelyn Woods is a painter. She attended Central Washington University, graduating in 1979 and completed graduate work in 1993 at the University of Washington. She was born in New Orleans and grew up in New York, Virginia, Texas and Florida until settling as an adult in the Seattle area in 1970. Her home and studio are located on Whidbey Island. She has had solo exhibitions at Prographica Gallery, Davidson Galleries, Museo Gallery and Smith and Vallee Gallery.
“My process as a painter is deeply interwined with why I paint. I am interested in the connection between where memory and the unconconsious emerge. A part of my process is rooted in nthe practice of walking in solitude, be it in a neighborhood, an urban landscaoe or in the woods close to my home. During those times I am taking in a multitude of images, smells, the stillness or movement of air, the quality of light and the overall feel of a place. Embodied in the aforementioned qualities resides the duality of stillness and the vitality of of energetic life which I in turn soak up like a sponge. It is here where I am able to make sense of a life lived and its relevance to living in the moment with all senses activated. This is whenI know I am on to something that I can work with back in the studio. Images get burned into the retina for a myriad of unknown reasons. Be it a mood, color, pattern, feel or even a hint of something familiar. Strength, vulnerability, beauty, and fragility are components of nature present in the tenuous balance of life which I find fascinating as subject material. When the elements of play, curiosity and exploration are combined with the intellect there is a chance for my work to evolve in a personally exciting and meaningful way. What continually keeps me engaged and inspired as an artist is the thrill of exploration which happens in the laying down of paint and what transpires in the process.
In essense my work is an excavation of self in time and space much like a self-portrait. I don’t always know where a painting will take me, but if in the process I get to explore in a world of my own cration, well…that’s a good place to be.”
